Otto’s Jolly Roger Imperial Stout

Otto's Jolly Rogers Imperial StoutI feel like I’ve been a lucky man lately.  I’ve been lucky that every stout I try ends up being really friggin good.  This one is no different.  This stout comes from Otto’s Pub and Brewery out of State College, PA.  Home of the Penn State Nittany Lions.  I’ve been to Otto’s twice.  It’s a really small place.  But the beer they produce isn’t small in taste.  It’s a great place to just sit down, enjoy a few beers with friends.  Oh and thanks again Jeff for providing a fantastic beer.  You surely know how to pick them.

As you can see from the picture, Jolly Roger poured pitch black with a huge tan head.  Head was full of huge holes.  Great retention and lacing.  Head would of probably sat there for hours if I let it.  As soon as you get this beer near your nose you get a nice rich dark chocolate aroma.  You also get a nice amount of roasted malt, some smokiness, and a small amount of dark fruit.  It’s really a fantastic smell.  Taste is rich and full of chocolate.  That comes together with everything listed above.  I also noticed a bit of molasses and coffee that I really didn’t pick up in the smell.  Awesome stuff here.  The mouthfeel is thick, sticky, and creamy.  In the aftertaste you get a bit of a dry feeling.

As you can tell I really did like this beer.  My list of great stouts is growing and that’s never a bad thing.  This isn’t exactly world class but it’s pretty damn close.  If you’re ever in State College be sure to stop by and see Otto’s.  All their beer is quality.
