What the Company Says: A doggone good stout!

Alcohol 8.2% by volume

The Intro: In my last Lagunita review I reviewed their Maximus IPA.  Which is supposed to be a Imperial/Double IPA.  I thought it was mislabeled and though it was more of a regular American IPA.  Sadly this stout suffers the same fate.  It doesn’t deserve the “Imperial” before it’s name.  When I think of a Imperial Stout, I think of one or more of the following.  High in alcohol, high in taste, and maybe it should be thick like a stout usually is.  Well this brew fails in two of the three catagories but it doesn’t mean this isn’t a very good tasting stout.

The Look: Pours the usual black stout color with a huge head. Head dissolves rather quickly and laces the glass.   You’ll notice right off the bat as you are pouring this stout that it’s not real thick at all.  It reminded me of pouring a lager or ale.

What the Nose Thought: Dark roasted malt. Nutty.  A very sweet coffee smell.  Chocolate.  The smell is very pleasant.

And the Tastebuds?: Now like I said I think Imperial Stouts should have big tastes.  This one doesn’t.  Even though it doesn’t have one it also doesn’t disappoint.  It’s a fantastic tasting stout.  It’s fantastic due to it’s sweet coffee taste.  Roasted malt rounds out the taste with the chocolate.

The Feel: Not thick like other stouts.  Almost a watery feel.  Goes down very easy. Smooth.

Would You Drink More?: Yes.  It tasted very good and would easily pick up another one.

Ending Notes: Lagunita makes some very good beer.  They just might want to back and change the labels on some of their brews.  To me and to other people I’ve heard from this isn’t quite an Imperial but the taste is top notch.
