Ommegang Ommegeddon
Found: Sickpuppy from ShouldIDrinkThat.com
Price: I believe it was 12 dollars a bottle
Website: http://www.ommegang.com/
What the company says: On July 12, 2007, at Belgium Comes to Cooperstown, we released Ommegeddon on the world.
The world must have loved it because it’s disappearing quickly. It’s all gone from our warehouse and is all out in the distribution channels. If your bar or retail store doesn’t have it ask them to get it before it is totally consumed. We will brew it again but probably not until 2008.
Ommegeddon is 8% ABV Belgian-style ale with a wild twist ¯ a dose of Brettanomyces yeast and a blast of dry hopping. It’s a strong blonde ale with a sharp citrus flavor that, like the other Ommegang ales, has a dry finish. Its dryness and funkiness begat the name of Ommegeddon ¯ for the time when the forces of light and dark battle for world dominion. It’s time for you to pick your side.
What I say: Once again thanks to Sickpuppy from http://www.shouldidrinkthat.com for hooking me up with this beer. I’ve been trying to find it for a while but he came through for me.
I believe this is my 5th Ommegang review. I’ve loved the 4 before it and I also love this beer but this might be my least favorite of theirs but it’s still an awesome beer. That just goes to show you how good their stuff is. First off the beer isn’t strong in taste like the artwork on the bottle would lead you to believe. But instead you get a great beer to just chill and enjoy. The beer pours out a nice golden haze with a huge white head that sticks around a bit. First thing I noticed was lemon or citrus smell. It was pretty big. The taste is a bit sour, bitter and a bit dry. Piney hops. Once again you’ll taste citrus. The good news is I’ve never had a beer quite like this. It brings together so many different textures in your mouth that it’s just a different experience. If you see it, give it a try. Yes some of their other beer is better in my opinion but I know if I see it I’m going to pick a bottle up. Especially since it’s hard to find.
On a side note, you’ll notice that this beer is brewed with Brettanomyces. Instead of me doing the explaining, just so happens that a visitor to this site has written a great article on it. Go visit Jason at http://www.brewbasement.com for part 1 of his article about this very subject.

Glad you liked it dude! For the cost though I dont think I would go crazy looking for next year’s batch, it was over 15 bucks here in PA (in NY its about 8 bucks!). Great beer but I just don’t think it’s worth the price.
CHEERS!

15 dollars! Sorry bro I didn’t know you paid that much. If you want some dough back let me know!
Nah! Sorry dude, I didn’t mean it that way!
Just wanted to point out how f’ed up the prices are in PA due to the messed up tier system we have.
Glad I got out of PA then =) I know you didn’t mean it that way, just didn’t want you paying more then what I paid for the epic.
Whats up guys, I’ve got to agree with you all that it is hard to rationalize dropping $12 per bottle (thats the going rate here in Chicago)..but I do really love this beer.
I’m also a huge Hennepin fan..and this ale is damn close to that recipe (not to mention the brett additions)..what I really wonder is how it will funkify over the next year or so.
Cheers,
Brian
Brian,
I am a huge Hennepin fan! That bottle runs about 9 bucks here in PA so it doesn’t hurt as much when paying for that bad boy. I’ve never cellared any Ommegang beers, might have to give that a shot. I am not a huge believer in aging beers, other than maybe a barley wine or something similar. I just think if you age an IPA or any other ale you are just simply drinking old beer
9 DOLLARS! Bro you need to get out of PA! I believe it runs about 6.50 here. In Virginia Beach were not allowed to have cellars so no cellaring for me =)
Dave…$6.50!!! Thats criminal!
Sickpuppy-I agree with you in regards to cellering beers, higher gravity definetely makes sense but with Brett additions at bottling (as with the Ommeg..) the brett will just get more of a foot hold as time goes on, but at this point they should be towards “prime” funkiness since the batch was bottled and dosed with Brett in June of 07.
Do you see the similarities between Hennepin and this brew? I’m wondering if my palate is just shot or not.
Cheers! Oh and I’m definetely losing $12 after work today
Brian,
I agree, there are only a select few beers that I will cellar. I don’t really even expect much out of a few of the Vertical Epic series beers.
Dave,
Yeah our 3 tier distributor system here in PA does suck but we are better than most states honestly (great thread about this in the BA forums!)
I feel lucky to have the variety of craft beers available here, we do have a kickass selection in PA!
