The Intro: OK so you are probably guess this is going to be a favorable review for Dogfish Head. First off they are in my top 2 favorite breweries (Stone is the other and I can’t decide which is my favorite) and 90 Minute IPA is one of my favorite if not my favorite IPA. As you can see above this is 90 Minute IPA mixed in with Oak-Aged English Strong Ale. Folks this beer is well just fantastic and easily in my top 5 of all time.
The Look: Pours a nice deep amber color with a nice head that sticks around.
What the Nose Thought: Beautiful smell here. Just fantastic. You get the 90 Minute smell which consists of citrus, grapefruit, small piney hop smell and then you get the vanilla, caramel, and smokey smell from the oak aged ale. Wow just wow.
And the Tastebuds?: If you thought the smell was good, well the taste is better. The mixture of everything in this beer doesn’t overpower itself. Everything is balanced. Piney hops, citrus, vanilla, caramel, and the oak taste. A little sweet. Balanced. Wow. Perfect.
The Feel: The feel is slightly thick. The oak aged ale gives off a smokiness feeling in your mouth and nose. Hard to explain but just adds to the beer.
Would You Drink More?: Yes. I have nothing else to say.
Ending Notes: This is the best American Double IPA out there. Sorry everyone else. If I had to drink one kind of beer for the rest of my life this might be it.
Rating: A++

Also good…and a beast!
I actually thought this brew underperformed.
I would not say that it was gross…I enjoyed the beer a great deal. But, marketed as an Oak Aged beer, I think it came up lacking. In my op. it needed a good extra year in the barrel (or on top of oak chips, whatever they use). I thought the oak flavor was minimal, hardly distinguishing this from the 90 minute IPA, which happens to be one of my favorite IPAs.
Like I said, it’s good, but not what the bottle hails it as.
Dogfish head is also one of my favorite American Craft brewers too, in fact, I just enjoyed and reviewed Chateau Jiahu, which was delicious.
Well honestly I noticed this years batch was not as good as the past 2 years. Don’t know why but it tasted a tad bit different.
You also need to remember I’ve had a ton more IPAs since I’ve had this one. It’s still up in the top 3 for me.
I actually had this brew just last week at the Dogfish Head Alehouse in Falls Church. This also takes top honors in my book. Absolutely phenomenal! I ought to seek out a previous year’s vintage.
I have only tried it this one time, so it could be a bit off. I am not a huge hophead so I don’t typically seek IPA’s out. The beers you review on this site are rarely available where I live.
Where do you live?
I live in Virginia Beach but I also order from Californa and the Chicago area.
